A Legacy in Every Stitch

The museum was founded in 1942 by William Purnell, Julia A. Purnell's son, to preserve the remarkable legacy of her needlework.

Born in 1843, Julia Anne LeCompte discovered her artistic calling at age 85, dedicating her later years to crafting intricate pieces that captured the essence of Snow Hill, Maryland. Her work, which included over 1,000 detailed depictions of local homes and gardens, was the museum's original centerpiece.

In 1957, the collection was moved to its current home in the historic St. Agnes Catholic Church, a building constructed in 1891, ensuring that the stories of the past remain accessible to future generations.

Expanded Judy Johnson Exhibit

William Julius “Judy” Johnson (1899–1989) was born in Snow Hill and became one of the greatest third basemen in Negro League baseball. In 1975, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, becoming one of the first Negro League players to receive that honor. This exhibit celebrates Johnson’s achievements and honors Worcester County’s connection to one of America’s baseball greats.

New Local Artist Exhibition Opening with Nash Clark, July 31st, 6:00pm-8:00pm

My name is Nash Clark, and I am an adventure-loving girl with a passion for the arts. Most of my paintings are done in acrylics, however, I also enjoy using other media types such as watercolor, pastels, pencil, wood, and even clay. My main source of inspiration stems from all the experiences I’ve had while traveling combined with my passion for the natural world. Working both as a Naturalist at a state park, and at a museum here on Delmarva, I love to educate and inspire others to take notice of the world we live in and to bring awareness to the many environmental issues that merit our attention.

Snow Hill Oral Histories

Nick Anthis is building a community-driven history archive. He is currently looking for everyday residents willing to record short, informal oral history interviews about life in town, as well as anyone willing to share vintage photos of downtown businesses, streets, and events. Whether you have deep roots in the area or a great story to share, Nick wants to hear from you.
